by Hugh Whitemore

Based on the book Alan Turing, The Enigma by Andrew Hodges

A compassionate and often amusing play concerning the remarkable mind and tragic fate of Alan Turing, mathematician and computer pioneer who broke the code in two ways. One was by cracking the German Enigma code at Bletchley Park during World War II for which he was decorated by Churchill and lauded by the state. The second was by shattering the gentlemanly English code of sexual discretion and making little attempt to disguise his homosexuality. For this he was arrested on a charge of gross indecency. Whitemore’s play, shifting back and forth in time, constantly seeks to find a connection between the two events and tackles major questions such as the relationship between mathematics and personal morals whilst telling a very good story.

We received very positive reactions from the audience for this show. Christopher Try said, “Tonight was the first AmDram production I have ever attended and I was amazed. We are all conditioned by watching professional productions on the TV, and the danger is that we forget that we are not watching the results of highly experienced actors (and actresses, to be old fashioned) supported by teams of professionals. However the perfomances produced this evening were outstanding. My congratulations to all of you involved.”

In 2008, St Jude’s Players transported you to the magical world of the Arabian Nights when men were men, women were as expected and genies were the amzing third kind!
The adventure took Aladdin from one life-threatening scrape to another, but he won through and claimed the hand of the beautiful Princess Badroulbadour. Norman Robbins’ pantomime was full of all the characters and action needed to make St Jude’s Players Aladdin the spectacle of the year.

The crew of the Galaxy Fleet Star Ship Saga Traveller were on a routine mission in the Delta Quadrant, when things started to go wrong. A strange signal arrived from an unknown source, the ship’s doctor was convinced he was a peasant from Barcelona, the newly recruited Ensign Dim was revealed to be an android, and the Communications Officer, Lt Speakeasy, was murdered! It was up to the audience to solve the mystery and decide which of the crew members was the killer.

The play follows the actions of the Wicksteed family and their associates as they work through the effects of various infidelities and suppressed passions in this farcical comedy about the British attitude to the permissive society.

Set in the Wicksteeds’ home in 1970s Hove, the action highlights the hypocrisy and double standards that lie beneath the surface of apparently respectable families in a round of mistaken identities, sexual encounters, and long-held secrets.
